The problem with cataloging a home library

Most book collectors have a rough idea of what they own, but not an exact record. When a friend asks if you have a copy of something, you dig through shelves. When you buy a book at a used store, you get home and realize you already have it. When you want to lend something and need to remember where it went, there is no system to check.

Spreadsheet-based catalogs exist, but building one manually — typing author, title, publisher, ISBN for every book — takes hours. Existing apps either require a monthly subscription, need a separate mobile install, or have interfaces built around social features you do not need.

ISBNFetch is built for the one afternoon when you want to scan your library, get a clean spreadsheet, and be done. No ongoing cost. No app to maintain. Just scan, collect, export.

How collectors use ISBNFetch

1

Walk shelf by shelf, scan each barcode

Open ISBNFetch in your browser, tap the camera scan mode, and point your phone at the barcode on the back of the book. Most books return a result in 1–3 seconds. If a barcode is missing or unreadable, you can type the ISBN manually from the copyright page.

2

Every scan is saved to your library automatically

ISBNFetch builds your personal digital library as you scan. Each book record includes title, authors, publisher, publication date, page count, language, description, and cover image. You can add a reading status — unread, reading, finished — and search or filter your collection at any time.

3

Export your full collection to a spreadsheet

When you are done scanning, export everything with one click. The CSV download opens directly in Excel, Google Sheets, or Apple Numbers. Your complete library — title, author, publisher, date, ISBN — in a clean, sortable spreadsheet.

Common questions from collectors

Does ISBNFetch work on books without a barcode?
Yes. If a book is too old to have a barcode, you can type the ISBN manually from the copyright page. Very old books may not have an ISBN at all — those were published before the ISBN system was introduced in 1970.
What if ISBNFetch can't find a book?
ISBNFetch queries multiple book databases and returns the best available result. Coverage is strong for books published after 1970 and for widely distributed titles. Rare, self-published, or very old books may return limited data or no result.
Can I edit the book details after scanning?
Currently ISBNFetch saves the data returned by the lookup. Manual editing of individual records is on the roadmap.
How long does it take to scan a full bookshelf?
Most people can scan 30–50 books in about 10 minutes once they get into a rhythm. A full room of bookshelves — 300–500 books — typically takes 1.5 to 3 hours.
Can I access my library from multiple devices?
Yes. Your library is tied to your account, not your device. Sign in from any browser to access your full collection.
